Norfolk School Games Virtual Athletics

The second of our school games virtual articles is all about the athletics competitions. Sportshall athletics is always a big hit and one of the most popular events that we run in our Norfolk School Games calendar; holding it virtually seemed to be equally as popular this year!

The competition was open to both primary and secondary schools with a separate competition for them. Each competition had 5 different events included for pupils to have a go at. For primary pupils; shuttle runs, standing long jump, vertical jump, speed bounce and a target throw. For secondary pupils; shuttle runs, standing triple jump, vertical jump, speed bounce and a chest push.

For each challenge, pupils were encouraged to try their best at each event and were awarded points which went towards an average score for their class. The emphasis was on whole classes working together to achieve their final score as a team.

In the primary competition, we had a total of 65 different schools participate, 62 primary schools and 3 special schools. A huge well done to all schools who entered this competition. A special mention goes to those schools who had the most pupil engagement in their classes: Bure Valley, South Wooton Junior, Swaffham Junior, Taverham Junior and North Denes Primary.

In the secondary competition, there was a total of 6 schools who took part. Well done to all pupils who participated, especially Smithdon High School who had the most pupil engagement.

It was also fantastic to see so many schools engaging pupils in a sports leader role to support the competition.

We hope those who entered the competition enjoyed it. Come back next week to read about the next competition…golf.
